UMS Book Fair returns to family shopping!

The Scholastic Book Fair will be hosted by UMS on Oct. 17-21, 2022.

We will continue to have the in-person fair as well as the digital fair. 

Our in-person fair shopping times are:

Tuesday, Oct. 18th 6:00-7:30 pm

Wednesday, Oct. 19th 3:30-5:30 pm

Payment methods include cash, check (made to UMS PTA), credit, eWallet (Scholastic digital gift card)

If you are visiting the in-person fair, don't forget to bring your own bag to the fair!

Students may shop the in-person fair during the school day, if they have cash, eWallet, or a check made to UMS PTA.

Our digital fair will run from October 17-30, 2022.

We are hosting the book fair to raise money to pay for the school wide subscription to BookFlix (Scholastic's digital book collection of both fiction and nonfiction) as well as to encourage reading!

 

UMS made a Red Clover quilt!

 Students at UMS have been reading this year's Red Clover books. In honor of Nana Akua Goes to School, the students each created a square for our school quilt. Nana shares symbols that are important with her granddaughter by making a quilt. 

Students thought about what is important to them and decided on symbols to represent that on their squares. We have a colorful quilt full of heart!

A book about food got us thinking...

 We enjoyed the book, Every Night is Pizza Night, by J. Kenji Lopez-Alt. The main character, Pipo, believes that pizza is the best food and should be eaten every night. Her parents send her on a quest to try other foods in the neighborhood to see if her favorite stays the same. 

Second graders started thinking about their favorite foods, where they enjoy them, and who shared with food with them. We then made a goal of creating a book of their favorites where everyone has a page to share about their food. Here are a few examples:

Hour of Code

 The Hour of Code is happening across the world during the week of Dec. 6-10, 2021. The goal is to introduce computer science to students all around the world and give them time to code.

Making Magical Yets!

 We read the book, the Magical Yet, by Angela DiTerlizzi. In the story, a girl wants to give up on learning to ride her bike after a fall until she discovers her magical yet, who knows she can get it!

A UMS Book Fair

 We have a Book Fair Coming!

The Fall Book Fair will be online and in-person. Students only may shop for books at school. Families may shop together online Oct. 11-24, 2021. Our Book Fair is to support reading and to make sure each classroom has access to BookFlix (which is a database to hundreds of read alouds). Our fair will run October 12-15, 2021. Soon you will see a flyer coming home highlighting a few titles found at the fair. I will also be putting together an order form with pictures of the book cases. Families can look at the order form, circle what they want, send the order form with payment to school, and the order will be sent home in backpacks (or special arrangements for surprises can be made). BOGO Book Fair June 10 & 11, 2021!

 We are having a BOGO Book Fair at Field Day this year! You Buy One and Get One!

Pleased to say we are now fully staffed for this event!

The BOGO Fair will be held outside at UMS. The students may shop during the day. Adults may shop in the evening. Purchase 1 book and get 1 book (of equal or less price) free. We will be accepting payment of credit cards or eWallet (Scholastic's digital payment) during this event (checks, if needed, made to UMS).

Please make sure that your student(s) have their library books on book exchange day so they may borrow new titles. We appreciate your support! Each grade may borrow 2 titles each time they get to visit. Because of this unique year, there is no saving shelf to hold their library choices overnight so they can locate their books at home. So it is important they have their books on their library day. Thank you to all of our families that are assisting the students in this task!

Welcome to the UMS Library!

 

 

I hope you all had time to read this summer! We did at our house, as you can see Pixie and Aurora are enjoying a good story. They joined us often in our read alouds this last spring. Our library is waiting for you. Champ and Pigeon are ready for you to enjoy books from our collection again. 

If you are at school a couple days a week, then your class will have a book exchange time. If you are learning from home only this year, you will have access to the collection with a request form and then be able to pick-up your items. Everyone will see library lessons in Seesaw this year.
