Second grade explores after reading about Bobbi Gibb

After our second graders read about Bobbi Gibb running the Boston Marathon, we used a tool called PebbleGo to discover other women from history. Each team was given clues about a famous woman, then the team used PebbleGo is locate the name of this person to discover why she was known in history. This was a challenging assignment that the students accomplished! They were able to learn about historic figures and conquer using the technology. Way to go, Champs!

Red Clover Titles we have enjoyed so far...

Red Clover Books are part of a state wide picture book award program. Each year there are 10 titles featured. We read them together as a part of our library curriculum and then discuss. In the spring all students (K-4) have the opportunity to vote for their favorite title. We have talked about friendship, family, and what interests us as a small piece of program so far this year.
Happy Reading everyone!

Red Clover Voting

We are conducting our Red Clover Book Program Voting this week. The
students and I have read 10 picture books together this year as part of
this program. All Vermont students K-4 have the opportunity to be a part
of this state literacy program.
This week we reviewed all 10 books and the students decided which
one was their top choice. Earning their vote by making a connection with
them, having a great story, or marvelous illustrations. After all the votes
are tallied, we will write again with our school winning title. All of our
voting results are sent to the state to be included in the statewide voting.
We should have a Red Clover Award winning title by early May.

Our Easter Surprise author visit

Mr. Churchman and Laddie came back to UMS for a visit to share Mr. and Mrs. Churchman's new book, the Easter Surprise, with all of us.

He also had a surprise for us! A new lamb named Moonbeam got to see UMS students and staff.

If you missed our sale of the Easter Surprise, don't worry the Phoenix Bookstore in Essex has copies! We heard the new story, searched for hidden bunny pictures, had a few questions answered by Mr. Churchman, and got to pet Laddie and Moonbeam. Thank you for the visit, Mr. Churchman and family!

Thank you

Thank you to all of the volunteers that helped us have a successful
book fair! We so appreciate your time and commitment!

A big thank you to all of our families that attended the fair to assist
your child’s reading practice!

World Read Aloud Day

Did you know that it is almost World Read Aloud Day?  On Feb. 1, 2019 we will celebrate the power of reading words aloud together. It is the tenth anniversary of the creation of this special day that shares the love and importance of reading across the whole world.

"Reading aloud not only helps develop literacy skills, but it also builds community and connects us to each other. On World Read Aloud Day, people all around the globe read aloud and share stories to advocate for literacy as a human right." www.litworld.org

UMS plans on celebrating the day with special times and guest readers. You never know when we will Drop Everything And Read Aloud!

Help with Dinosaurs

Our library was so lucky to have the help of a second grader to improve our dinosaur section! Knowing that we have an in house dinosaur expert on hand, we asked Jaxon for his opinion about keeping some of our dinosaur books. He used his knowledge to make our dinosaur section even better! We thank him for his hard work and for making the library and even better place for our dinosaur readers to visit.

Movie Celebration

Right before vacation, some of the Kindergarten students joined me in the library to watch the movie, Sing. We enjoyed the show, a bit of popcorn, and some coloring stations before leaving for break.

Chef Roy Choi, a Red Clover Book!

One of our Red Clover books this year is about a real chef that loves to cook street food on a food truck in California. After reading his story, we designed our own food trucks and picked food we would serve from our trucks. Here are a few of our students hard at work on their trucks:
